New poetry collection explores human/animal and human/planet dynamics

Hurley, N.Y. — Lantern Publishing & Media (LPM) recently announced the publication of Kind, a book of poems by Gretchen Primack, with a foreword by Tim Seibles, a National Book Award finalist and former Poet Laureate of Virginia.

Award-winning poet Kazim Ali calls Kind "essential reading." According to Primack, it’s a book “for anyone concerned about the animal world and our place in it.” She added, “We have powerful art of various genres on this subject; this is an opportunity to add poetry to that list.”

Winning praise from writers like Carol J. Adams ("The Sexual Politics of Meat"), Marisa Miller Wolfson ("Vegucated"), and Nickole Brown ("The Donkey Elegies"), poems in this collection include "Holstein," written from the perspective of a cow in the dairy industry, and "Climate Change," on the impact of humans on the world around us. Other poems involve wild animals and companion animals, among others.

Originally published by Post Traumatic Press in 2013, Kind went into four printings and gained a cult following before being snapped up by LPM and reprinted in hardback, with many new poems. The cover and a dozen interior paintings by fine artists Dana Ellyn, Jane O'Hara, and Gus Mueller work in conversation with the poems.
